Pre-Op Instructions

Your surgery is scheduled with Dr Rolandelli at Morristown Memorial Hospital.  You will receive a call from Surgical Access the night before surgery to advise you of the time of your surgery and the time you should arrive at the hospital.  Please report to the Surgical Access Unit at the Carol G. Simon Building at least 1 ½ to 2 hours prior to your surgery time.

Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before surgery.  You should consult your own physician regarding the taking of any morning medications and /or cardiac medications.   You should also know that if you take aspirin it must be stopped ten (10) days prior to surgery.

Preoperative blood work is required.  This must be done no more than 7 days prior to surgery and fasting maybe required 8 hours before the tests.  An appointment for pre-operative lab work should be made with the Pre-procedural Evaluation Center at 973-971-6800.

For certain surgeries you will be asked to sign consent for a possible blood transfusion.  In the rare event that you would need a transfusion we need permission to give it to you.  Some patients prefer to designate a donor who may be a relative or a friend to donate blood in case a situation arises that you may need it.  Please be aware that this person must match your blood type and be compatible with your blood type. This must be arranged two weeks before your surgery is scheduled.  In some instances patients bank their own blood. (autologous blood).  We do not recommend this.  The chance of needing blood is very remote and if you give blood before your procedure your blood counts will be low to start with.   The last option and the one we find most suitable is to let us use blood from our blood bank.  Today, the risk of transmissible infections associated with transfusions of banked blood is extremely low.

We will notify your insurance carrier of this procedure.  However, you should inquire if a second opinion is required and what your financial responsibility is.  If any further information is needed in regards to billing, please call the Physician Billing Office at 973-971-6280.

PLEASE READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY.  IF THERE IS ANYTHING YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND OR HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE FEEL FREE TO CONTACT US AT 973-971-7200.
